Telefónica Tech has launched a self-sovereign digital identity solution designed to store verifiable credentials directly on users’ devices and enable selective sharing of personal information with third parties.
According to the company, the solution allows individuals to hold and manage digital credentials locally, maintaining control over when and how personal data is shared. Credentials supported by the platform can include identity attributes, certifications, and access permissions, with users authorizing disclosure on a per-transaction basis.
The platform is built around self-sovereign identity and verifiable credential principles, which aim to reduce centralized data storage and give individuals greater control over their digital identity. Telefónica Tech said organizations using the solution can issue, verify, and revoke credentials while maintaining interoperability and compliance with applicable regulations.
The company positioned the offering as suitable for a range of use cases, including age verification, access control, digital certificate issuance, and online fraud prevention. By relying on selective disclosure, the model is intended to limit unnecessary data sharing, allowing relying parties to verify specific claims rather than collecting full identity profiles.
Telefónica Tech stated that the solution is designed to integrate with existing digital ecosystems, enabling organizations to incorporate verifiable credentials into onboarding and authentication workflows. The platform supports credential lifecycle management, including issuance and revocation, which is a key requirement for regulated environments and enterprise deployments.
The launch reflects continued commercial interest in self-sovereign identity models as governments and enterprises explore alternatives to centralized identity systems. Verifiable credentials are increasingly being evaluated for scenarios where privacy, data minimization, and user control are prioritized, particularly in consumer-facing digital services. The approach aligns with broader blockchain-based biometric identity initiatives and follows similar implementations by other telecommunications and technology providers globally.
