TECH5, a Geneva-based biometrics and digital identity company, has reported strong results in the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Friction Ridge Image and Features Technology Evaluation Exemplar One-to-Many (FRIF TE E1N). According to TECH5, its fingerprint recognition algorithm ranked among the top performers in the evaluation, which measures accuracy, efficiency, and scalability in open-set identification scenarios.
About the FRIF TE E1N Evaluation
The FRIF TE E1N program is part of NIST’s long-running friction ridge testing initiatives. It evaluates fingerprint algorithms by requiring them to search one or more exemplar prints against participant-defined databases containing millions of subjects. The process is designed to approximate real-world conditions where fingerprint databases are large and diverse. NIST relaunched the evaluation under the FRIF umbrella in 2024, consolidating earlier fingerprint testing efforts into a unified framework.
NIST’s FRIF evaluations provide governments and industry stakeholders with reference points for selecting biometric systems used in applications such as civil identity programs, elections, passport issuance, and border security. While NIST publishes the test methodology and evaluation criteria, detailed performance metrics are typically shared directly by participating companies rather than in public leaderboards.
TECH5’s Reported Performance
TECH5 announced that its algorithm achieved best-in-class outcomes in the FRIF TE E1N testing, citing accuracy, speed, and template efficiency as differentiating factors. The company has emphasized that its technology can process templates quickly while keeping their size smaller than competing solutions. These claims, while originating from TECH5’s own materials, indicate the company’s confidence in the competitiveness of its fingerprint recognition platform.
Ameya Bhagwat, Chief Revenue Officer at TECH5, said the results highlight the importance of the evaluation: “Governments worldwide look at these benchmarks when making decisions about Automated Biometric Identification Systems (ABIS). Our technology has been validated against the latest NIST standard, confirming its readiness for critical national-scale applications.”
Although TECH5 has referenced superior performance in multiple areas, independent verification of the specific figures—such as search volumes, false non-identification rates, or processing speed comparisons—has not been made available by NIST at this time.
Expanding Global Presence
The evaluation success comes as TECH5 continues to grow its international footprint. The company, which secured $10.5 million in funding from Singapore investors in 2021, has introduced a range of biometric innovations in recent years. These include its touchless fingerprint solution certified at PAD Level 1 in 2023, as well as deployments with partners across Europe as digital identity upgrades gain momentum.
Its flagship T5-OmniMatch ABIS platform, incorporating the validated fingerprint technology, is positioned to support large-scale identity management systems for civil registration, border control, and law enforcement. With NIST evaluations serving as a benchmark for procurement, TECH5’s reported success in the FRIF TE E1N evaluation is likely to strengthen its case for participation in upcoming government tenders and national identity projects.
