Sweden Says State E-ID Applications Will Open on Dec. 1, 2026

Swedish authorities have announced that applications for the state’s new electronic identity credential, known as Sverige-id, will open on December 1, 2026, giving the country’s sovereign e-ID effort a concrete start date, issuing model and delivery channel.

The Swedish Police Authority said Sverige-id will be tied to the national ID card and used through an app downloaded to a mobile phone after issuance. Swedish citizens who want the credential will need to apply for a new national ID card at the same time, while registered residents who are not citizens are expected to use a separate ID card without travel functions. The police authority said the credential will be offered at the highest trust and security level and made available to all people registered in Sweden.

The timetable turns an earlier government mandate into an operational milestone. Sweden’s government previously directed the police authority to design and issue a highest-assurance state e-ID in line with revised eIDAS rules and in coordination with DIGG. Ministers also said the credential would form part of the basis for the digital identity wallet being developed under the European framework. That places Sweden inside the same regional buildout that has already produced an EU-backed digital ID platform and other operational moves such as the France Identite app approved for boarding at all domestic airports.

Sweden is also framing the project as a domestic security measure. In explaining the assignment, the government linked reliable state-backed identity to efforts against organized crime, identity misuse and fraud against welfare systems. That makes the project more than a compliance exercise for EU interoperability. It is also being positioned as part of a national identity-governance overhaul in which the state takes clearer responsibility for digital identity issuance.
