Suprema Launches Cloud-Based Biometric Access Platform

Suprema has introduced BioStar Air, a new cloud-native access control platform designed to eliminate the need for on-premise infrastructure while supporting native biometric authentication. The launch marks a strategic expansion of Suprema’s efforts to support flexible, scalable access control deployments across various industries.

Edge-Based Architecture with Biometric Integration

BioStar Air replaces conventional server-based systems with a decentralized edge architecture. Each smart reader contains its own relay and processing capability, removing the need for dedicated door controllers. This approach allows for more flexible deployments and independent operation at each access point, reducing installation complexity and infrastructure costs.

Unlike many legacy systems that integrate biometrics as an add-on, BioStar Air offers native biometric support at launch – specifically facial recognition – with fingerprint authentication expected to follow in future updates. The platform also supports a variety of non-biometric credential types, including RFID cards, QR codes, PINs, mobile credentials (via iOS and Android), and has announced upcoming support for Apple Wallet integration.

The system is compatible with a broad range of Suprema and MOCA System devices, including the company’s latest biometric readers. It also supports real-time monitoring, surveillance camera integration, and video analytics, making it suitable for sites that require centralized security management and incident response capabilities.

Designed for Modern Security and Multi-Site Use

BioStar Air is optimized for organizations managing access across multiple sites or tenants. The platform provides centralized credential management, allowing administrators to issue and revoke credentials across branches and properties in real time. Its multi-tenant support also positions it for commercial and residential property applications where distinct user groups must be securely separated within the same system.

Security and compliance features include ISO 27001 certification and end-to-end data protection through AES-256 and TLS 1.2 encryption. Firmware updates are deployed automatically from the cloud, reducing maintenance burdens and eliminating the need for manual patching.

This launch follows Suprema’s recent software certification for its BioStar 2 VMS, underscoring a broader company pivot toward cloud-based systems. BioStar Air also represents a departure from the traditional architecture of BioStar 2, which relied on on-premise infrastructure and server-driven management.
