Power savings and touchless security
The HPD system is built around STMicro’s VL53L8CP sensor, an 8×8 multizone direct ToF device capable of detecting multiple people, tracking head orientation, and recognizing gestures. It also supports posture-based wellness monitoring. STMicroelectronics reports the technology can reduce daily power consumption by over 20 percent by enabling features such as Adaptive Screen Dimming, Wake-on-Approach, and Walk-Away Lock.
Beyond power savings, the HPD system enhances privacy and security through hands-free authentication. It supports Windows Hello functionality without requiring a visible camera feed, helping users log in securely while avoiding unnecessary exposure of facial data. These touchless capabilities address growing demand for gesture-based interfaces across consumer and business devices.
“Time-of-Flight technology is expanding beyond smartphones and tablets into drones, robots, AR/VR headsets, home projectors, and laptops,” said Dr. Florian Domengie, Principal Analyst for Imaging at Yole Group. “Compact and affordable multizone dToF sensors are now emerging to enhance laptop experiences and enable new use cases.”
Market-ready solution with broad adoption
The HPD system is designed as a turnkey solution for device manufacturers. Its plug-and-play format allows PC and monitor makers to integrate the technology without additional software development. According to STMicroelectronics, its FlightSense sensors have already been embedded in over 260 PC models, and the HPD solution represents a next-generation evolution for that installed base.
The announcement comes amid challenging market conditions for STMicroelectronics, which is reportedly navigating headwinds in the industrial and automotive sectors. Still, the company’s investment in energy-efficient and AI-integrated sensor systems positions it to lead in growing categories such as personal computing and smart displays.
“Building on the integration of ST FlightSense technology in more than 260 laptops and PC models launched in recent years, we are looking forward to see our new HPD solution contributing to make devices more energy-efficient, secure, and user-friendly,” said Alexandre Balmefrezol, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Imaging Sub-Group at STMicroelectronics. “As AI and sensor technology continue to advance, with greater integration of both hardware and software, we can expect to see even more sophisticated and intuitive ways of interacting with our devices, and ST is best positioned to continue to lead this market trend.”
With the ToF sensor market projected to grow significantly over the next five years, STMicroelectronics’ HPD platform arrives at a moment of rising demand for intelligent, touchless computing interfaces. By combining efficient hardware with embedded AI, the company aims to set a new standard for privacy-conscious, energy-aware user interaction.
