Spain’s Digital DNI Achieves Full Legal Parity with Physical ID Card

Spain’s digital version of the Documento Nacional de Identidad will carry the same legal weight as the physical identity card starting April 1, 2026 – setting a milestone in the country’s transition to digital identity credentials.

The full legal equivalence was established through Real Decreto 255/2025, published in the Boletin Oficial del Estado on April 1, 2025, which for the first time formally regulates the DNI in both physical and digital formats. From April 1, 2026 – exactly one year after the decree’s publication – public administrations and private organizations requiring identification must accept the digital version accessed through the MiDNI mobile app for the same purposes as the physical card.

Spain launched the MiDNI app in April 2025, allowing citizens to carry their National Identity Document on smartphones as a digital companion to the physical ID card. The twelve-month transition period gave entities time to implement technical and procedural measures to accommodate the digital format.

Chief Commissioner Francisco Herrero presented the MiDNI app during training sessions in Murcia’s region targeting police, security personnel, prison officials, and public service employees, emphasizing “its reliability and ease for identifying oneself with a telephone.”

The digital DNI allows Spanish citizens to use their smartphone for most everyday identification within Spain, including dealings with government offices, banks, utilities, and other service providers that require official ID. The MiDNI app uses secure QR codes validated in real-time, with users able to display different levels of personal information depending on the verification context.

Registration requires downloading the official app (featuring EU and Spanish flag logos), linking it to a phone number, and connecting it to the physical DNI using the support number (43 letters plus six digits) printed on the card.

Spain is also participating in an EU pilot program with Greece, France, Italy, and Denmark to test a privacy-focused digital age verification system based on the forthcoming European Digital Identity Wallet.

Important limitations remain: the digital DNI will not replace the physical document for all purposes, with physical DNI or passport still required for international travel outside Spain. The Real Decreto 255/2025 frames the digital DNI as an extension of the traditional DNI rather than a replacement, meaning both formats will continue to coexist indefinitely.

Spain’s approach represents a measured transition strategy that maintains physical documents while adding digital alternatives, contrasting with more aggressive digital-only approaches attempted in some jurisdictions. The timing positions Spain alongside other European nations advancing mobile digital ID implementations ahead of the EU Digital Identity Wallet framework’s 2026-2027 rollout deadlines.
