Spain Orders UK Expats to Update Biometric ID Cards Before EU Border Changes

British nationals living in Spain must obtain new biometric residency cards before October or risk being flagged as illegal overstayers when the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) launches. The British Embassy in Madrid has confirmed that Spain’s older green residency certificates will not be recognized by the new border control system.

The EES, managed by the EU agency eu-LISA, will use biometric data to track entries and exits of non-EU travelers, enforcing the 90-day limit on visa-free stays. Only the newer TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) cards will be accepted as valid proof of residency to exempt British residents from these restrictions.

“We want British residents in Spain to be able to travel smoothly into this country. That’s why it’s really important that anyone with a green certificate gets a TIE,” said British Ambassador to Spain Sir Alex Ellis. “It can take a few months, so start the process now to ensure smooth travel once the EES comes into force later this year.”

The implementation of the EES represents a significant upgrade in border control technology, with eu-LISA developing advanced biometric tracking systems that will be rolled out across EU borders. The system is scheduled for a phased implementation starting in October, initially covering 10 percent of border crossings before expanding to full operation by April 2026.

British nationals still holding green certificates risk being wrongly identified as tourists overstaying their welcome if they don’t obtain a TIE before the system launches. This could result in denied entry and forced return to the UK, with appeals requiring departure from Spain until resolved.

The British Embassy emphasizes that the green certificate’s incompatibility stems from its failure to meet the requirements specified in Annex 22 of the Schengen Borders Code. Officials advise affected residents to consult the UK government’s “Living in Spain” guide for detailed application instructions and to begin the TIE application process as soon as possible.
