South Korea’s Hancom Signs AI Facial Recognition Supply Deal with Japan’s Cyberlinks

South Korean technology company Hancom has signed a contract to supply its AI facial recognition product, HANCOM AUTH, to Japan’s Cyberlinks. The agreement marks a cross-border supply deal as Hancom pushes to expand its presence in the Japanese market, where biometric authentication deployments continue to attract vendor activity.

HANCOM AUTH is described as incorporating liveness detection and anti-spoofing functionality, positioning it in the segment of facial recognition products that market specifically against presentation attacks and deepfake-based fraud. The solution is built on FacePhi technology, which Hancom licenses as part of its biometric authentication stack.

The deal comes as Japan’s justice ministry biometric ID funding request keeps government focus on national biometric programs. Japan’s broader biometric market spans government identity systems, banking, and enterprise access control, all of which represent potential channels for solutions with strong anti-spoofing credentials.

Hancom’s Japan strategy extends beyond this single supply agreement. The company has established a dedicated Japan corporation and is reported to have formed a joint venture with Tokyo Kiraboshi Financial Group, indicating a longer-term commitment to the market rather than a one-off licensing arrangement. These moves position Hancom to participate in Japan’s financial sector biometric programs as well as broader commercial deployments.

Liveness detection and anti-deepfake capabilities have become a competitive differentiator in facial recognition procurement, as synthetic identity fraud and AI-generated imagery have made traditional 2D matching more susceptible to spoofing. Vendors increasingly frame their solutions around ISO 30107-3 compliance or proprietary presentation attack detection as part of their market positioning, and HANCOM AUTH’s framing follows that pattern.

FacePhi, the Spanish biometric software firm whose technology underpins HANCOM AUTH, has been active in the Asian market and has supply relationships with financial institutions across several countries. Hancom’s use of FacePhi technology in its Japan-facing product reflects a broader trend of regional system integrators pairing internationally developed biometric algorithms with local sales and support infrastructure.

The Hancom-Cyberlinks supply pact adds to the cross-border biometric commercial activity in the Asia-Pacific region. Japan’s biometric demand is long-standing, with international vendors including Vision-Box establishing a Japan presence for airport biometrics, reflecting continued demand across both public and private sector applications.
