India’s South Central Railway (SCR) has introduced an Aadhaar-based biometric authentication system for its Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) staff, replacing traditional username-password logins with fingerprint verification. The new system has been launched at six major TTE lobbies and is expected to expand across all 73 lobbies in the zone as part of Indian Railways’ digital transformation efforts.
Biometric Rollout Across Major Stations
The first phase of implementation covers lobbies at Secunderabad, Kacheguda, Vijayawada, Guntakal, Guntur, and Nanded. Fingerprint devices installed in these lobbies connect directly to the C-DAC portal, requiring staff to authenticate both at departure and arrival points. This sign-on and sign-off process provides a tamper-proof digital record of duty hours and staff presence.
“SCR has always been at the forefront in adopting digital technologies, and this biometric sign-on and sign-off system is one more such digital initiative that will ensure transparency in the system,” said Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, General Manager of South Central Railway.
Improving Accountability and Efficiency
With real-time monitoring of attendance, the new system enhances efficiency in staff management and reduces the scope for discrepancies in manual reporting. A Sridhar, Chief Public Relations Officer of SCR, explained: “Earlier, the sign-on/sign-off activity of ticket checking staff was done using a username and password. Now, to streamline the login mechanism of ticket checking staff, Aadhaar-based biometric sign-on/sign-off activity has been introduced at TTE lobbies.”
SCR operates a large network of services, including 347 mail and express trains and 175 passenger trains daily across its divisions in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Guntakal, and Nanded. The scale of operations makes reliable attendance systems critical for ensuring adequate staffing during peak travel periods and for keeping precise duty records.
Part of Indian Railways’ Digital Drive
The biometric authentication initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ wider modernization strategy. Similar Aadhaar-based attendance systems have already been deployed in other zones, including Mumbai, Pune, and Solapur, reflecting a nationwide shift toward digital verification and transparent workforce management. By extending this system to all 73 TTE lobbies, SCR is reinforcing accountability and improving operational oversight across its network.
The transition from passwords to fingerprints is expected to reduce administrative delays, strengthen transparency, and provide a clear audit trail for staff deployment. The move highlights how India’s railways are increasingly leveraging biometric technology not only for passenger-facing services but also for internal workforce management.
