South African Rail Giant Transnet Deploys Palm-Vein Biometric Access Controls

South Africa’s state-owned logistics company Transnet Engineering has implemented palm vein biometric kiosks to enhance security for accessing its SAP Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems, marking a significant shift away from traditional password-based authentication methods.

The new biometric system will secure access to critical SAP applications that Transnet Engineering uses to manage its physical assets throughout their lifecycle. This implementation comes as organizations worldwide increasingly adopt biometric solutions to strengthen security measures.

Palm vein biometrics offers distinct advantages over conventional authentication methods. Unlike fingerprints or facial recognition, palm vein patterns are internal and cannot be easily spoofed or forged. The technology captures the unique vascular patterns beneath the skin’s surface using near-infrared light, providing a highly secure and reliable method of identification.

The move is expected to significantly reduce security risks associated with traditional password-based systems, such as credential sharing, theft, or compromise. It also streamlines the authentication process for employees, eliminating the need to remember and regularly update complex passwords while maintaining a high level of security.
