“The pivot to biometric support could help Sony to appeal to more customers in the US, with the mass market now getting used to biometric security as a standard feature on mobile devices.”
Sony’s mobile customers are finally going to get biometric security with the latest versions of its Xperia smartphones. The new XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2 devices have all been announced just ahead of this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where Sony will showcase the smartphones.
They mark the first time that Sony has offered fingerprint recognition to the US market, with sensors located on the rear of each device. It isn’t the first time Sony has put fingerprint sensors on its mobile devices, though; previous iterations in the Xperia line featured sensors embedded in their home buttons, but, curiously, Sony disabled them in the US market, possibly because of a secretive business deal.
The pivot to biometric support could help Sony to appeal to more customers in the US, with the mass market now getting used to biometric security as a standard feature on mobile devices. At the same time, the support for fingerprint recognition comes way behind the curve, with some now anticipating a shift to facial recognition and multi-modal authentication in the wake of Apple’s debut of its Face ID system on its very successful iPhone X.
Still, better late than never.
