SmartSearch Acquires Credas to Create UK Digital Compliance Powerhouse

UK-based RegTech firm SmartSearch announced today that it has acquired Credas Technologies, a specialist in identity verification for the legal and property sectors. The move, valued at a reported £77.8 million, is a significant step in SmartSearch’s strategy to create an end-to-end digital compliance and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) platform for the UK market.

The acquisition combines SmartSearch’s robust AML screening and monitoring capabilities with Credas’s specialized identity verification technology. Credas, which was divested by parent company Dye & Durham, brings deep expertise and a client base of over 1,000 firms in the property and legal sectors—industries facing intense pressure to strengthen their Know Your Customer (KYC) processes. This focus on high-stakes property transactions is crucial, as the UK has been working for years to increase transparency and combat money laundering in its real estate market.

For SmartSearch, which already serves approximately 7,500 regulated businesses, the deal provides a more comprehensive service offering. By integrating Credas’s technology, the company can provide a single, unified platform for client onboarding, identity verification, and ongoing AML monitoring. This consolidation is critical as UK regulators continue to push for more sophisticated digital identity solutions to combat financial crime.

Backed by Triple Private Equity, the acquisition signals a clear strategy of growth through consolidation in the UK RegTech market. As regulatory demands intensify, firms are increasingly seeking integrated platforms that can manage the entire client lifecycle, from initial identity proofing to continuous monitoring. The deal positions the newly combined SmartSearch-Credas entity to compete more effectively against larger, more generalized compliance vendors by offering a highly specialized and robust solution for legally mandated checks.
