Singapore Trials Facial Biometrics for Motorcyclists at Woodlands Checkpoint Border Crossing

Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has launched a trial enabling motorcyclists to use face biometrics at Woodlands Checkpoint, one of the world’s busiest land border crossings connecting Singapore to Malaysia. The trial is testing two designated motorcycle lanes in the arrival zone.

Under the trial system, motorcyclists scan their passport or QR code, lift their helmet visor, remove anything obstructing their face such as sunglasses, and look into the camera to scan their face biometrics. Eligible travelers do not need to have their fingerprint biometrics scanned, streamlining the clearance process.

The trial is part of ICA’s “New Clearance Concept” to “make immigration clearance faster and more convenient while maintaining border security.” The ICA has not announced a fixed duration for the trial, stating it will depend on feedback as it proceeds.

The motorcycle biometrics trial fits into Singapore’s larger digital transformation of border control. The ICA estimates that by early 2026, 95% of travelers will be able to clear immigration via automated lanes at Singapore’s checkpoints. The country has been progressively expanding passport-free biometric clearance across its borders.

The Woodlands Checkpoint processes significant motorcycle traffic, as motorcycles are a popular mode of cross-border transport between Singapore and Malaysia. The ability to verify identity while wearing a helmet (with visor lifted) addresses a practical challenge specific to motorcycle travelers that traditional biometric gates don’t accommodate.

The trial demonstrates Singapore’s continued innovation in frictionless border control, adapting biometric technology to specific traveler segments and use cases beyond standard passenger categories. By enabling authentication without requiring full helmet removal, the system balances security requirements with traveler convenience and safety.
