Singapore Tests Facial Recognition Fare Payment at Punggol Coast MRT

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority is testing facial recognition as a way to pay public-transit fares at Punggol Coast MRT station, allowing enrolled participants to pass through a modified gate without tapping a card.

The closed trial is limited to selected officers from the authority and other public agencies. Participants register a face profile and link it to an existing SimplyGo travel card. When an enrolled person approaches the designated gate, a camera identifies the face and charges the trip to the linked card account.

The test applies only at Punggol Coast. Participants continue to use their cards normally at other stations and on buses, which means the current exercise is evaluating one biometric entry point rather than a network-wide replacement for contactless fare media. The authority has not disclosed the trial’s duration or the number of participants.

LTA told The Straits Times that it currently has no plans to extend the technology to other stations. That makes the project an operational evaluation rather than an announced public rollout. The trial can nevertheless provide evidence on recognition speed, gate throughput and how reliably a face-linked payment method works in the lighting and crowd conditions of a functioning rail station.

Face-based payment systems combine identity and transaction authorization in a single interaction. South Korea has also permitted Lotte Card to test facial recognition payments through a regulatory sandbox, although the Singapore trial applies the model specifically to transit access. Such deployments must distinguish enrolled riders quickly enough to avoid creating a bottleneck while providing a fallback when recognition fails.

The project also raises practical questions about consent, retention and the separation of travel records from biometric templates. Details about the vendor, matching architecture and data-retention arrangements have not been publicly disclosed. Those elements would become more important if the authority moved from a staff trial to wider passenger use.

Transport operators have been exploring biometrics to reduce repeated presentation of tickets or credentials. In aviation, passengers have similarly expressed interest in a complete biometric journey rather than isolated checkpoints. Punggol Coast offers Singapore a contained environment for testing whether the same frictionless model can translate to high-frequency urban travel.
