SIA Names FaceFirst Advisor Dan Merkle as New AI Advisory Board Chair

The Security Industry Association (SIA) has appointed Dan Merkle as the new chair of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Advisory Board. Merkle, a veteran in the security and public safety space, currently serves as an advisor to the facial recognition company FaceFirst, where he previously held the role of CEO. He is also the founding chair and former CEO of Lexipol, a compliance solutions provider for public safety agencies.

He also sits on the board of directors at the National Policing Institute.

As the AI Advisory Board’s new chair, he will help guide SIA’s efforts to ensure responsible development and deployment of AI-driven technologies in security contexts. The board’s mission includes engaging with regulators on emerging AI policy issues, developing training resources for security professionals, and supporting standards-related work through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

“Since joining the SIA AI Advisory Board a year ago, I have been greatly impressed by the caliber and commitment of its members,” Merkle said. “The complexities of emerging AI development, use and governance benefit from a candid and transparent dialogue. Our group has engaged a broad group of companies and individuals with deep experience and knowledge contributing to that dialogue.”

Merkle brings with him experience in facial recognition technology, including his ongoing advisory role at FaceFirst, a company known for deploying AI-based identification tools in the retail and public safety sectors. He replaces outgoing chair Bill Bozeman, a widely respected figure in the security industry who helped launch the advisory board and oversaw its foundational work.

In a statement, SIA CEO Don Erickson praised Merkle’s leadership and dedication to ethical AI innovation. He also acknowledged Bozeman’s contributions as the inaugural chair, noting his efforts to position the advisory board as a credible voice on the governance of AI in security.

The board has produced several key resources to support the industry’s understanding of artificial intelligence, including SIA’s Glossary of AI Terms in Security Solutions and a monthly newsletter focused on policy developments, industry use cases, and ethical best practices. As AI and facial recognition technologies continue to raise questions about privacy, fairness, and oversight, the board plays an increasingly central role in facilitating dialogue across industry, government, and civil society.

Merkle’s appointment arrives amid active scrutiny of AI in law enforcement. These include recent developments such as public consultation efforts in Scotland over facial recognition in policing and New South Wales Police’s decision to suspend facial recognition use over concerns about racial bias. These issues underscore the need for informed, cross-sector leadership in the development of security-focused AI systems.
