Roblox had announced that by the end of this year, all users who access communication features on its platform will be required to complete comprehensive age verification. The new rules will apply to both text and voice chat, marking one of the most significant child safety reforms in the company’s history.
Three-Layered Verification System
The company explained that the system will rely on a three-step process combining facial age estimation, government ID checks, and parental consent for minors. To access communication tools, users will need to submit a selfie for AI-powered analysis, which will categorize them into specific age brackets: under 13, 13 and older, or 18 and older. The additional requirement for ID verification is designed to reduce risks of false submissions, while parental approval will be necessary for minors to confirm access.
“We’re taking this step as part of our long-term vision as a platform for all ages,” said Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer. “We expect that our approach to communication safety will become best practice for other online platforms, whether lawmakers pass laws requiring age verification for all platforms in the future or not.”
Regulatory Pressure and Safety Controls
The announcement comes amid growing scrutiny of online platforms and their child safety practices. Governments worldwide are introducing stricter requirements, with the United Kingdom’s Online Safety Act setting new standards and similar measures emerging in other jurisdictions. In the United States, lawsuits filed by state attorneys general, including in Louisiana, have accused Roblox of failing to adequately protect children, intensifying the pressure for reform.
A central safeguard of the new system will prevent communication between adults and minors unless both parties can verify they know each other in real life. Roblox will also enforce restrictions that limit users to content and features deemed appropriate for their verified age group.
The age verification measures expand on tools already in place. Earlier this year, Roblox introduced Trusted Connections, which adds age-based controls to friend requests, and Roblox Sentinel, an AI system that flags potentially harmful interactions. The company is also working with the International Age Rating Coalition to implement standardized content ratings from agencies such as ESRB and PEGI.
Privacy and Technology Concerns
Roblox argues that its technology is accurate enough to reliably assess users across different age groups, including teenagers, who were previously difficult to classify. However, some researchers caution that facial estimation systems can be prone to error, bias, or spoofing. The new policies will therefore raise questions around how the company secures the biometric and identity data it collects, and whether independent oversight will confirm its claims of reliability.
Despite these concerns, the company maintains that expanding age verification is critical to improving safety for its community of over 70 million daily users. By requiring identity proof for communication features, Roblox is betting that its multilayered approach will become a model for compliance and online safety standards worldwide.
