Queensland has expanded its Digital Licence app to support professional driving credentials for taxi, rideshare, bus, and limousine drivers, bringing more than 56,000 transport workers onto the Thales-powered mobile driver’s licence (mDL) platform. Certified professional drivers can now store, share, and manage their driver accreditation digitally alongside their standard licence, check their licence status, and present credentials on demand without needing to carry physical documents. The app works offline and supports storing multiple licences and accreditations on a single device, making it practical for drivers who hold several concurrent certifications.
Customer Services Minister Steve Minnikin said the expansion reflects the government’s digital-first direction for professional licensing. “By bringing these licences into the digital space, we’re making it easier for drivers to access and use their credentials securely,” Minnikin said.
The Digital Licence app is built on Thales digital identity technology and complies with the ISO/IEC 18013 international mDL standard, as well as Australian federal government national digital ID standards and security protocols. Overall app adoption stands at more than 1.25 million Queenslanders, growing at roughly 1,000 new users daily, with over 1.6 million digital credentials issued to date. Eighty percent of state citizens report preferring digital access to government services over physical document alternatives, according to state government figures.
The professional driving credential addition follows the February 2026 integration of driver trainer and motorcycle trainer accreditations and last year’s integration of Queensland Building and Construction Commission licences covering more than 105,000 tradespeople. The expansion builds on the Queensland Digital Identity platform launch in April 2025, which introduced unified passkey-secured login for all state government services. It also addresses Queensland’s digital licence adoption challenges from early 2025, when the government announced a push to consolidate credentials and drive uptake across all licence categories.
Queensland’s app is part of Australia’s broader mDL market alignment on ISO 18013-5, with identity verification firms building interoperable checks against state-issued digital licences. Additional transport accreditations are planned for later in 2026.
