Proof, the identity verification and electronic signature platform, has joined the FIDO Alliance as a Sponsor member to contribute to the development of identity standards for autonomous AI agents. Proof is specifically focused on the emerging challenge of establishing verified, accountable identity for AI agents that take consequential actions on behalf of human users, a framework the company describes as Know Your Agent.
The core concept Proof is advancing involves binding a verified human identity, established to NIST Identity Assurance Level 2 standards through document verification and biometric comparison, to the AI agent that acts on that human’s behalf. IAL2 requires in-person or remote identity proofing with a document verification step and a biometric comparison, making it one of the more rigorous assurance levels applicable to consumer and enterprise workflows. The binding creates an auditable chain of accountability: when an AI agent initiates a transaction, signs a document, or accesses a restricted system, that action is cryptographically tied to the verified identity of the human principal who authorized the agent to act.
Proof’s background is in identity-proofed digital notarization, where notarized and witnessed electronic transactions already require a verifiable chain of human identity accountability that maps directly to the authorization requirements for AI agent actions.
OpenAI’s FIDO Alliance board seat for agent authentication was announced in April 2026, signaling the strategic priority of the initiative at the platform level. Days later, FIDO Alliance’s AI agent authentication push formalized into the Agentic Authentication Technical Working Group, drawing contributions from Google, Mastercard, and OpenAI.
Wink and Vouched demonstrated biometric proof of personhood for AI agents in March 2026, binding face, palm, and voice biometrics to agent authorization events in a working deployment.
FIDO Alliance is best known for its passkey and FIDO2 authentication standards and has been expanding its scope to encompass broader digital identity and AI-era authentication challenges.
