Papua New Guinea is taking a significant step forward in its digital transformation journey with the announcement of SevisPass, the country’s first Digital ID system specifically designed for the security sector. The initiative, jointly developed by the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the Ministry of Police, aims to modernize identification processes and enhance security measures across the nation.
Minister for ICT, Hon. Timothy Masiu, highlighted the transformative potential of the initiative, stating, “The rollout of SevisPass is not only about improving how government delivers services—it’s also about securing our systems, empowering the private sector, and creating new opportunities for our citizens.”
The implementation of SevisPass comes at a time when Pacific nations are increasingly adopting digital identity solutions to streamline government services and enhance security measures. This regional trend has seen several neighboring countries implementing similar digital transformation initiatives to modernize their administrative processes.
The new system is expected to deliver multiple benefits, including enhanced service delivery efficiency, strengthened national security protocols, and improved access to government services for citizens. Additionally, the digital ID system aims to create new opportunities for private sector engagement in the digital economy, potentially catalyzing economic growth in the technology sector.
While specific implementation details are still forthcoming, the initial rollout will focus on the security sector, potentially serving as a pilot program before expansion to other government departments. This approach aligns with global trends in digital identification systems in which governments are increasingly adopting phased approaches to digital ID implementation.
