Palma de Mallorca Switches on EU Entry/Exit Biometric System

Palma de Mallorca’s Son Sant Joan Airport has activated the European Union’s Entry/Exit System, bringing biometric border checks to one of Spain’s busiest holiday hubs. The system went live for non-EU travelers on November 19, making Palma the second major Spanish airport after Madrid-Barajas to adopt EES. The rollout is part of a wider national program to modernize border infrastructure across eight airports and meet Schengen obligations ahead of the EU’s April 2026 deadline.

The EES replaces manual passport stamping for most third-country nationals with a digital record of each entry and exit. When travelers arrive at Palma, they are now directed to self-service kiosks that scan their passport and capture four fingerprints and a facial image; in some deployments, iris biometrics are also supported. These data points are stored in a shared EU database for three years in routine cases, or up to five years for overstays or refusals of entry. The aim is to improve the detection of overstays, strengthen external border management, and provide more consistent data across the Schengen area.

Spain’s airport operator AENA has installed 36 kiosks and six staffed booths at Palma to support the new process. According to VisaHQ’s reporting, this deployment is funded from an eighty-three-million-euro budget covering hardware, software, and physical reconfiguration of passport halls across Spanish airports. Barcelona-El Prat and Málaga-Costa del Sol are scheduled to follow in December, extending EES coverage to additional hubs that serve large volumes of leisure and business travelers.

Authorities are planning for a six-month transition period during which mixed lanes and longer queues are expected. Airlines and tour operators are advising non-EU passengers, including UK nationals, to arrive at least thirty minutes earlier than usual while travelers and staff adapt to the new procedures. British citizens who hold Spain’s biometric TIE card are exempt from EES registration but are encouraged to carry the card so they can bypass the kiosks and use designated lanes. For others, once their initial EES enrollment is complete, subsequent crossings should be faster, relying on biometric checks rather than repeated data capture.

For travel managers and security professionals, Palma’s EES activation is another step in the normalization of biometric identity checks at EU borders. Organizations that manage regular travel into Spain may need to update employee guidance, travel profiles, and connection planning to account for the new process, particularly during the bedding-in phase when border throughput is more variable. At the same time, EES expands the scope of biometric and biographic data held in centralized EU systems, which will continue to attract attention from privacy advocates and regulators as deployments widen.
