The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has announced that certified electronic versions of Oman’s national ID card and driver’s licence are now legally recognized across the Sultanate. The move gives digital credentials the same legal validity as physical cards in many official situations, allowing citizens and residents to present them when interacting with government agencies, financial institutions, or law enforcement.
How the Digital Credentials Work
According to the ROP, the certified electronic versions can be accessed via the official website and mobile application. Each credential undergoes authentication and certification by the government to ensure protection against fraud and unauthorized duplication. First Lieutenant Salem bin Saeed Al Farsi, Project Manager for Digital Identity at the ROP, explained: “Even in official situations, such as presenting identification to a government entity or to a police patrol, the electronic version can be used because it is legally recognised.”
The system is designed to provide a secure alternative when physical cards are not in the possession of the holder. Users can display their certified electronic ID through the mobile interface, which contains digital certification features confirming authenticity. This enables verification during routine checks or when accessing official services without requiring the physical plastic card.
Applications and Scope
The ROP states that the digital credentials can be used for a broad range of purposes, including administrative procedures, banking and financial transactions, and routine identity verification during interactions with authorities. The policy ensures that electronic IDs carry legal weight in many contexts where physical documents were previously required.
Officials emphasize that the recognition does not eliminate the need for physical cards altogether. Instead, the system provides flexibility and convenience for situations when a citizen or resident does not have their card at hand. The extent of use for sensitive processes – such as international travel or judicial procedures – has not yet been clarified in official statements.
Part of Oman’s Digital Transformation
The decision represents a significant step in Oman’s wider digital transformation strategy, which aims to modernize public services and improve efficiency through technology. The certified digital ID builds on the Sultanate’s existing electronic ID infrastructure, which has progressively expanded to support more government services and verification systems.
By granting legal recognition to electronic national IDs and driver’s licences, Oman joins a growing number of countries in the region adopting digital identity systems. Neighboring states have introduced their own digital credential initiatives, reflecting a broader shift toward secure, technology-enabled public administration.
