OCR Studio Launches Browser-Based Scanner for Arabic ID Documents

Identity solutions developer OCR Studio today announced the launch of what it describes as the world’s first browser-based Arabic ID scanner. The new technology allows users to scan, verify, and extract data from Arabic-script identity documents entirely within a web browser, eliminating the need for a dedicated mobile app.

The scanner operates using WebAssembly (WASM), which enables the complex recognition and verification logic to run locally on the user’s device. This on-device processing means sensitive document images are not sent to external servers, a key feature for enhancing data privacy and addressing data sovereignty concerns. The system supports multi-script documents, combining Arabic and Latin text, and includes live selfie matching with liveness detection to prevent spoofing attacks.

This browser-based approach is a significant development for digital onboarding in the Middle East, North Africa, and other Arabic-speaking regions. By removing the requirement to download an app, companies can reduce friction and lower customer drop-off rates in critical identity verification workflows. The technology is particularly relevant for the fintech, e-commerce, and government service sectors.

Analysts note that providing robust support for the complexities of Arabic script, which has traditionally challenged generic OCR systems, gives the solution a competitive edge. OCR Studio’s in-browser model could also pressure rivals in the identity verification market, many of whom rely on server-based processing or native software development kits (SDKs). The success of the technology will depend on its real-world accuracy and its ability to meet the stringent compliance and anti-fraud standards required in regulated industries.
