Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has launched NINAuth, a new digital authentication platform designed to provide secure verification of National Identification Numbers (NIN) across a wide range of government services. The platform is now mandated for use by all federal agencies involved in identity-based service delivery.
Unified NIN Verification Across Public Services
Announced during a press event at NIMC headquarters in Abuja, NINAuth was described by Director General Abisoye Odutose-Coker as the federal government’s authorized gateway for real-time NIN verification. The platform supports identity authentication for key services including SIM registration, passport issuance, tax filings, and driver’s license renewals. It is accessible via web browsers, mobile applications, and API endpoints, allowing integration into a wide array of digital and in-person service workflows.
According to NIMC, the platform has been deployed in alignment with the Presidency’s directive requiring all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt NINAuth. The move is part of a broader effort to centralize and modernize Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure, a priority under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Security and Compliance Features
NINAuth is built with privacy and user consent at its core. The platform requires individuals to authorize any data access for identity checks, including Know Your Customer (KYC) processes. While technical documentation has not been publicly released, NIMC officials describe the system as featuring encrypted communication, secure APIs, and alignment with Nigeria’s evolving data protection regulations. Integration with third-party services is enabled through standard API interfaces, supporting interoperability with both legacy and modern systems.
The launch follows NIMC’s continued efforts to expand its national identity system. As of early 2025, the commission reports enrolling over 120 million individuals into the National Identity Database. While NINAuth adoption figures have not been published, the app is now available for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
The launch of NINAuth follows other recent digital identity initiatives by NIMC, including preparations for a biometric national census and expanded use of NINs in student and education loan programs. These efforts reflect Nigeria’s broader commitment to establishing a secure and unified digital identity ecosystem that can support inclusive access to services and economic development.
