Nigeria Immigration Service Begins Biometric Airport Overhaul

The Nigeria Immigration Service has begun a nationwide overhaul of airport operations, training frontline personnel to use biometric surveillance, automated e-gates and the Migration Information and Data Analysis System.

The first phase was a two-week tactical course for officers working at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. It ran from July 28 through August 7 and covered passenger profiling, visa and entry checks, passenger and crew clearance, apron operations and queue management.

Biometric systems were presented as part of an integrated border workflow rather than a stand-alone identity check. Officers received instruction on automated e-gates and MIDAS, the International Organization for Migration platform used to record traveler movements and check identity and travel-document information.

The NIS said the program will expand beyond Abuja as part of a broader effort to standardize airport procedures. Training also addressed ethics and anti-corruption controls, reflecting the service’s attempt to combine new technology with operational accountability.

Automated gates can compare a live facial image with the portrait stored in an electronic passport while checking travel eligibility. They allow some passengers to complete primary inspection with less officer involvement, leaving staff to handle exceptions, referrals and travelers who cannot use the gate.

Reliable operation still depends on the quality of passport chips, camera capture and watchlist data, as well as a clear process for false matches. MIDAS provides an additional record of crossings and can support checks against national and international data sources.

The immigration initiative is separate from Nigeria’s domestic passenger identity program. The Federal Airports Authority has been moving ahead with V-Pass facial recognition for domestic travel, which is designed to connect passengers with flight information before they reach airline counters.

That project followed government approval for biometric passenger verification at selected airports. The NIS training focuses instead on immigration and border-control functions for international travel.

Keeping those systems distinct will matter as deployments grow. Domestic passenger processing, airline identity checks and immigration inspection may use similar facial matching technology but operate under different authorities and data rules.

The Abuja course establishes a common operating baseline before wider deployment. The NIS has not published a timetable for training at every airport or specified how many additional e-gates and biometric devices will be installed under the overhaul.
