China-based smartphone maker Xiaomi has launched new iterations of its Redmi devices, and they’re once again using biometric sensors from Fingerprint Cards.
The new Redmi 4 and Redmi 4 Pro each feature an FPC1035 fingerprint sensor. It’s the same sensor model used in the previous Redmi device, the Redmi 3S Plus, and the Redmi Note 4 before that. A more basic version of the new Redmi that was launched along side these two, the Redmi 4A, lacks a fingerprint sensor.
The new integrations suggest that while FPC has been pioneering the concept of under-glass fingerprint sensors with its integration in the new Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design, more standard smartphone integrations will continue to come through the pipeline. But if the company can showcase its under-glass design in devices with more standard price tags – the Porsche Designs costs about $1550 – the concept could take off among its many other clients, and lead to an influx of home button-free smartphones into the market.
