NEC X, the Silicon Valley venture studio of biometrics giant NEC, has made a strategic investment in Indicio, a startup recognized as a market leader in decentralized identity (SSI) and verifiable credentials. The investment supports Indicio’s participation in NEC X’s “Elev X! Boost” accelerator program.
The partnership aims to combine NEC’s biometric authentication technologies with Indicio’s cryptographically verifiable digital identity platform. The stated goal is to develop new solutions for high-trust use cases, including streamlined digital travel, secure border management, and “trusted AI”.
NEC has been a major player in biometric authentication for decades, providing facial recognition systems deployed at airports globally and government identity programs. The partnership with Indicio represents an expansion into decentralized identity infrastructure, where users control their own credentials rather than relying on centralized databases.
Indicio’s platform enables organizations to issue and verify W3C-standard credentials without storing personal data in central repositories. The company’s technology has been deployed in various sectors, and the broader decentralized identity market has seen significant investment as organizations seek privacy-preserving alternatives to traditional identity systems.
The investment comes as multiple identity providers are developing frameworks to authenticate and govern AI agents, creating a “trust layer” that can be applied to both human users and autonomous digital systems.
