NEC Chairman Strengthens Alliance With India in Meeting With Prime Minister Modi

NEC Corporation has reaffirmed its commitment to the Indian market. The company has been active in India for more than 70 years, and has frequently served as a driving force for the company’s digital transformation.

Both sides have indicated that they want to build on that relationship in the years ahead. In that regard, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently sat down with Nobuhiro Endo, the Chairman of NEC, to discuss current projects and future development opportunities. The meeting itself took place in Tokyo, during Modi’s two-day visit to the city for the Quad Leader’s Summit. Modi was attending with an invitation from Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

In terms of accomplishments, Modi highlighted NEC’s involvement in India’s communications projects on Chennai-Andaman & Nicobar Islands (CANI) and Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands (KLI). NEC helped lay the underwater optical cable that brought network connectivity to the remote islands, which in turn improved economic prospects for local residents. NEC has also partnered with CSC e-Governance Services India to improve coverage for people in other rural areas.

NEC has been similarly active in telecommunications projects throughout the country, and in an increasing number of smart city initiatives in places like Thiruvananthapuram, Ahmedabad, and Surat. The company’s portfolio includes 5G networking tech, which provides the necessary infrastructure for digital transformation more generally. NEC’s biometric tech has been used to register citizens in India’s Aadhaar program, and for contactless screening at Indian airports.

During the conversation with Endo, Modi indicated that India is planning to implement some legislative reforms that will make it easier for NEC to do business in India and with the Indian government. The company already employs more than 6,000 people in India, and is working to develop new technologies for the market at its R&D facility in Bengaluru.
