NEC Launches Cloud-Based Biometric ID Service on Microsoft Azure

NEC Corporation of America has announced the launch of its Identity Cloud Service (ICS), a cloud-based identity verification platform that leverages NEC’s top-ranked biometric technologies. Hosted on Microsoft Azure, ICS offers high-accuracy verification, dynamic scalability, and rapid onboarding—all with the goal of reducing deployment complexity and cost.

ICS delivers a range of capabilities, including one-to-one verification, one-to-many biometric search, and advanced liveness detection to combat spoofing. It builds on NEC’s longstanding expertise in biometric authentication, with facial recognition technology that recently earned top rankings in the NIST Face Recognition Technology Evaluation (FRTE). In that evaluation, NEC achieved a 0.07 percent authentication error rate in 1:N testing across a dataset of 12 million people.

“ICS is an efficient, high-performance identity verification solution that allows organizations to access NEC’s top-ranked face recognition technology quickly and affordably,” said Eugene Le Roux, Senior Vice President of Digital Government at NEC Corporation of America. “The cloud-based service offers secure hosting on Microsoft Azure, including dynamic scalability and resiliency, with fast onboarding in a matter of hours.”

Unlike traditional on-premise systems that may take weeks or months to deploy, ICS enables enterprises to integrate biometric verification in hours. This cloud-first model is part of NEC’s broader effort to modernize digital identity infrastructure, complementing earlier innovations such as its FIDO2-enhanced biometric platform.

ICS is designed to support a wide range of industries, including financial services, e-commerce, hospitality, and secure access control in high-security environments. Use cases include digital onboarding, remote ID verification, and fraud prevention in online transactions. NEC’s biometric systems are already deployed at approximately 80 airports worldwide and have been used in major international events and hospitality settings.

While ICS is primarily focused on facial recognition, NEC also offers multimodal biometric authentication—including face and iris recognition—to further improve security and accuracy, particularly in high-risk scenarios.

The service incorporates a per-transaction pricing model to ensure accessibility for organizations of all sizes. Security is a core component: biometric templates are encrypted, and ICS is aligned with GDPR and HIPAA standards. While NEC has completed HIPAA security audits for its managed services in the past, the company has not specified whether ICS itself has undergone an individual HIPAA audit. NEC also conducts ongoing internal privacy audits and maintains a dedicated privacy management system as part of its corporate compliance framework.

In addition to its technology, NEC says it adheres to a set of AI and Human Rights Principles, which emphasize privacy, transparency, and fairness in the development and deployment of AI and biometric tools. These principles guide the ethical use of its solutions across global markets.

ICS also supports interoperability initiatives in the travel sector, including NEC’s ongoing collaboration with SITA to promote open standards and cross-industry adoption of secure digital identity systems for seamless passenger processing.
