Mumbai Police Use Facial Recognition, CCTV Analysis to Arrest Murder Suspect Within 12 Hours

Mumbai Police and the Government Railway Police used facial recognition software and extensive CCTV review to identify and arrest a suspect within 12 hours of a fatal stabbing near Malad Railway Station, according to an NDTV report.

NDTV described the case as a rapid investigation in which police combined video review with analysis of travel patterns to narrow down a suspect’s identity and location. The outlet said police formed five teams as part of the response.

The incident involved the killing of Alok Kumar Singh, a 32-year-old college lecturer, following what the outlet described as a minor dispute while alighting from a moving local train. Singh was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Investigators reviewed footage from hundreds of CCTV cameras, including cameras on train platforms, outside the station, and in nearby areas, according to the report. Facial recognition software was used alongside the camera review as police worked to identify and locate the suspect.

In addition to camera analysis, the report described investigators tracking what it called the suspect’s routine pattern to narrow the search. The suspect reportedly took a 7:18 a.m. train from Malad to Charni Road and returned at 4:16 p.m., a pattern the teams used to anticipate where he would appear.

The suspect was spotted in Triveni Nagar and arrested near the Malad auto-rickshaw stand around 7:40 a.m., before being taken to the Government Railway Police office in Borivali.

The report described the arrest as the result of coordinated work across multiple teams, with CCTV coverage used to track movements across the station environment and nearby streets. NDTV said the suspect confessed during interrogation and was remanded to police custody until January 29.

India has been expanding facial recognition and biometric systems across multiple jurisdictions, including AI-assisted facial recognition use in Delhi policing.
