Mitek Systems Names Digital Identity Pioneer Garrett Gafke as New COO

Mitek Systems, Inc. has appointed digital identity veteran Garrett Gafke as its new Chief Operating Officer. The company framed the move as a signal of its commitment to strengthening its executive leadership as it advances its identity verification and fraud prevention technologies in response to evolving digital threats.

Veteran Leadership to Accelerate Operational Strategy

Gafke brings over 25 years of leadership experience in the identity, fraud prevention, and payments sectors. He is best known as the founder and long-time CEO of IdentityMind, a digital identity firm acquired by GB Group Plc in 2021. He later served as President of Intellicheck from 2021 to 2023, and previously led Paymate as President and CEO through its acquisition by Flexigroup Ltd.

Most recently, Gafke has been active as an investor, advisor, and operator across early-stage startups, private equity portfolios, and venture-backed firms. His educational background includes a B.A. from Chaminade University, and his track record spans executive roles in high-growth and M&A-driven environments.

At Mitek, Gafke will focus on optimizing operations, advancing product development, and enhancing data analytics capabilities in support of the company’s core mission: combating digital fraud. His appointment comes amid broader strategic shifts, including the launch of the Digital Fraud Defender platform in late 2024, which leverages AI to detect deepfakes and prevent emerging forms of identity fraud.

Leadership Restructuring and Market Outlook

Gafke’s appointment follows other recent leadership changes. Edward H. West became CEO in October 2024, succeeding interim CEO Scott Carter, who now serves as non-executive Chairman of the Board. These transitions reflect Mitek’s renewed focus on long-term growth and operational excellence.

Mitek’s strategy has also been supported by key acquisitions in recent years, including biometric tech provider ID R&D and identity verification firm HooYu. These additions have enhanced the company’s technology stack and expanded its reach in both consumer-facing and enterprise-grade identity solutions.

Gafke’s compensation includes $4 million in inducement equity, split between performance-vesting restricted stock units (PSUs) and service-based vesting restricted stock units (RSUs), contingent upon his continued employment and achievement of performance targets.
