MIA Teknoloji Completes RFID-Based Biometric Identity Project

MIA Teknoloji has completed an R&D project for identity verification that stores biometric data on an RFID card and performs a one-to-one facial comparison when the holder presents the credential.

The Turkish technology company developed the system at Gazi University Technopark. The project began on January 1, 2025, and had a reported budget of 98,025,490.97 Turkish lira. Turkey’s Ministry of Industry and Technology and Gazi Teknopark certified its completion.

Company filings describe the design as an alternative to keeping every user’s biometric record in a central database. A person’s biometric data is written to the RFID card, and a verification device compares a newly captured face with the record associated with that credential.

The one-to-one process answers whether the person presenting a particular card matches its enrolled holder. It differs from an identification search, in which a face is checked against an entire population to determine who the person may be.

Keeping the reference record on the credential can reduce the amount of biometric information exposed through one central repository. The approach still depends on secure card personalization, encryption, reader authentication and a reliable process for replacing a lost or damaged card.

MIA Teknoloji has positioned the architecture as supporting Turkey’s Personal Data Protection Law, known as KVKK. Local storage can limit unnecessary transfer of biometric data, although compliance will also depend on how an operational deployment handles consent, access logs and any records retained outside the card.

Similar privacy goals appear in biometric smart-card systems that complete matching on the credential. Neurotechnology has developed on-card matching for face, iris and fingerprints, allowing a card’s processor to compare biometric templates without exporting them to a separate computer.

Biometric cards are also used for access control. Zwipe and LEGIC integrated fingerprint authentication into an NFC access credential so that the card releases its stored access information only after a successful match.

Completion closes the formal R&D phase for MIA Teknoloji’s project. The company has not identified an initial customer, production quantity or commercial launch date, leaving deployment and integration as the next stages for the RFID identity system.
