Metalenz Begins Customer Integration Trials for Polar ID, Eyes 2026 Deployment

May 14, 2025

Metalenz has entered customer integration trials for its new Polar ID solution, with co-founder and CEO Rob Devlin indicating that the first commercial deployments could arrive as early as 2026. The update came during a recent interview on the ID Talk podcast, where Devlin discussed the company’s efforts to bring secure, spoof-resistant facial recognition to a broader range of mobile devices.

Polar ID is built on Metalenz’s proprietary metasurface optics technology, a flat, nanostructured lens that replaces traditional multi-lens optical stacks while enabling advanced sensing capabilities. At the core of the system is polarization imaging, which allows the device to analyze not only facial features and three-dimensional shape, but also the material composition of the object being scanned.

That capability enables Polar ID to detect and reject sophisticated spoofing attempts, including high-fidelity silicone masks and deepfake video attacks. As Devlin explained, the combination of shape, depth, and material sensing positions Polar ID to meet biometric security requirements for payment-grade applications.

“Even if someone makes a perfect 3D scan of your face and puts it into the most jarringly lifelike silicone mask that you’ll ever see, Polar ID can still reject it,” said Devlin. “Other devices out there that are just using 2D—or even 3D—are able to be tricked by these masks. But Polar ID cannot.”

Metalenz sees Polar ID as a way to expand access to secure face authentication. While Apple’s Face ID remains a dominant solution in this space, Devlin said Polar ID could bring similar capabilities to Android devices, including mid-range and entry-level models where biometric spoof resistance has historically been limited.

The company is also exploring use cases beyond authentication. Polarization imaging could support new types of health and environmental sensing, such as identifying early signs of skin cancer or monitoring air quality by analyzing the way molecules reflect polarized light.

The launch of Polar ID reflects a broader shift in Metalenz’s strategy. The company is now developing full system-level solutions that combine its metasurface hardware with proprietary machine learning algorithms for image reconstruction and liveness detection. This approach allows Metalenz to deliver more tightly integrated solutions rather than acting solely as a component supplier.

To hear more about the science behind metasurface optics, the evolution of mobile sensing, and what Polar ID could mean for the future of face authentication, listen to the full ID Talk interview with Rob Devlin via the media player below, or wherever you get your podcasts.
