Malawi’s National Registration Bureau is preparing to launch the Nzika Digital ID Wallet on September 16, giving citizens a mobile version of key civil-registration credentials.
The app will initially hold a national identity card, birth certificate and marriage certificate. It is scheduled for release through Google Play and Apple’s App Store, and the bureau says Malawians living abroad can enroll if their records are already in the national database.
Users will begin onboarding by entering details from a valid national ID card and completing a liveness check with the phone’s camera. The process then links the verified identity to a password-protected wallet. The liveness step is designed to establish that a real person is present during enrollment rather than relying only on information printed on a card.
The digital credentials will supplement rather than replace physical documents. National Registration Bureau spokesperson Norman Fulatira said existing cards and certificates will remain valid, allowing people without compatible smartphones or reliable connectivity to continue using them.
The launch follows Malawi’s 2025–2030 civil-registration strategy, which set universal legal identity and broader access to registration services as national priorities. The mass registration program launched in 2017 has enrolled slightly more than 9 million citizens, Fulatira said.
Moving frequently used credentials into an app is intended to reduce repeated printing and make identity documents easier to present for services. Birth and marriage records also extend the wallet beyond a digital copy of the national ID, bringing multiple civil-status documents into a single mobile channel.
Other African governments are also linking civil registration with digital identity programs. Burundi recently expanded biometric civil registration as part of its work toward a national digital ID, while Malawi is building on a mature national registration database to issue mobile credentials.
The National Registration Bureau has published separate onboarding instructions for the Nzika app and plans a nationwide rollout. Registration offices will support users who need help linking their identity records to the wallet.
The bureau is launching the service nationally rather than through a geographically limited pilot. It has published step-by-step instructions covering app download, identity entry, liveness and wallet activation.
