Major Italian Bank to Trial Gemalto’s Biometric Mastercard

Gemalto has officially announced the first Italian trial of its biometric payment card technology.

It’s a collaboration with Mastercard and domestic bank Intesa Sanpaolo. It also presumably features fingerprint sensor technology from Fingerprint Cards, which first revealed that its technology would be used in an Italian pilot program early last month.

The trial will initially run in Milan, Rome, and Turin. Participating Intesa Sanpaolo customers will be able to make secure contactless payments with their biometric Mastercards just by holding a registered fingerprint over the sensor as they tap to pay; there is no need for a PIN or signature, and no value cap on the transactions.

Commenting in a statement, Intesa Sanpaolo Retail Manager Cinzia Bruzzone offered some indication of the excitement around this emerging payment card technology for financial institutions. “We are proud to have undertaken the first step to introduce in Italy a card which technology offers the consumers clear and concrete benefits, following our choice to anticipate and facilitate the diffusion of innovative technologies functional to people’s everyday banking,” she said.

The biometric payment card trial is scheduled to run for 16 weeks, and will presumably lead to expanded trials or perhaps a large-scale launch thereafter.
