Lotte Duty Free Debuts Palm Vein Biometric Payments at Gimpo Airport

Lotte Duty Free has introduced a palm vein biometric payment system at its Gimpo Airport store, becoming the first duty-free retailer in South Korea to deploy this technology. The system allows customers to register their palm vein patterns and link them to a preferred payment method, enabling transactions without the need for a physical card, passport, or boarding pass.

How the system works and its security benefits

Once registered, shoppers simply scan their palm at checkout to complete a purchase. Palm vein recognition is considered highly secure because vein patterns are internal and not visible from the outside, making them far more difficult to forge than many other biometric identifiers. The approach also supports a contactless retail experience, which can be particularly valuable in airport settings where hygiene and speed are priorities.

Part of a broader biometric payment trend

The launch at Gimpo follows other biometric payment initiatives within the Lotte Group. Lotte Card, a separate affiliate, recently received approval under South Korea’s financial regulatory sandbox to pilot facial recognition payments at select airports and duty-free stores. While the two programs are distinct, both reflect a growing emphasis on integrating biometric authentication into retail transactions.

Lotte Duty Free has indicated that it will continue to explore innovative technologies to enhance customer convenience and differentiate its shopping experience. If successful, the palm vein system could be rolled out to additional locations, expanding its availability to more travelers.
