LG Subsidiary Looks to SenseTime for Biometric Security

A subsidiary of Korea-based tech giant LG has teamed up with a Hong Kong-based facial recognition specialist to add security to its headquarters.

The subsidiary, LG CNS, specializes in IT services such as system and network integration, and IT outsourcing. As The Korea Herald reports, LG CNS operates an ‘LG Science Park’ located in Seoul, and has now added face-scanning devices to all 26 of the park’s points of entry.

Its partner is SenseTime, one of the world’s most highly-valued tech firms, and one of a group of firms in the China region that was added to a US blacklist last year over alleged involvement in human rights abuses pertaining to China’s oppressive state surveillance apparatus in Xinjiang, a region with a large Uighur Muslim population. SenseTime’s technology was implicated in a Human Rights Watch report on the abuses, but was later exonerated in a subsequent report from the same organization.

In announcing the new biometric security at its LG Science Park, LG CNS asserted that SenseTime’s facial recognition technology can match faces against a database in under 0.3 seconds and with 99 percent accuracy, even if subjects are wearing glasses or masks. LG CNS is evidently looking to protect the technology within its ‘Science Park’ with high-tech security technology at its border, though The Korea Herald did not cite any specific security threats facing the company in its report.
