Leaks Tip Faster Ultrasonic Sensor and Qi2 Charging for Google’s Pixel 10

According to leaked promotional material, Google’s forthcoming Pixel 10 lineup is expected to refine the biometric toolkit introduced in the Pixel 9. The most notable change is a second-generation ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that promises faster unlock times and improved accuracy when fingers are wet or dusty. Although Google has not confirmed the specification, parts‐supply data point to an upgraded Qualcomm 3D Sonic module rather than the optical readers found in earlier Pixel generations.

Fingerprint and face unlock: steady progress, familiar limits

Ultrasonic sensors read fingerprints by sending sound waves through the skin, generating a depth map that is less vulnerable to surface contamination than an optical scan. Google first adopted ultrasound in 2024, and the Pixel 10 is believed to push the technology further with a larger sensing area and shorter actuation time. On the facial-recognition side, leaks suggest Google will reuse the software-only Class 3 face unlock pipeline first certified on Pixel 8. If that approach carries into the new model, it should remain acceptable for banking and contactless payments yet may still struggle in very low light because the phone lacks an infrared depth array.

Industry observers expect Google to restore dedicated IR hardware in the Pixel 11, giving the 2025 model a transitional role. Until then, the combination of an ultrasonic reader and camera-based face unlock continues Google’s two-layer biometric strategy, balancing convenience with redundancy.

Qi2 charging, Tensor G5 silicon and wider security context

Beyond biometrics, the leaks mention Qi2 magnetic wireless charging. Full 15 W speeds will reportedly require a certified “Pixelsnap” ring case because Google may limit peak power without the alignment magnets. Internally, the handsets are tipped to run on a new Tensor G5 processor fabricated by TSMC on a 4 nm node, though clock speeds and neural-engine specifications remain unannounced. Early engineering-sample benchmarks hint at double-digit gains in on-device image processing and large-language-model inference, both of which depend on reliable real-time authentication to safeguard personal data.

The rumored upgrades arrive as Google rolls out broader security initiatives. The company launched its Android Identity Check prompt in January 2025, adding a standardized secure-credential confirmation flow that complements biometric unlock. Together, these measures reflect a market-wide trend toward layered security that pairs stronger sensors with hardware-level key storage and continuous risk evaluation.

Pixel 10 details are still provisional, and Google traditionally finalizes features in late summer ahead of an October launch. Even so, the reported biometric tweaks suggest the next Pixel will focus on incremental but meaningful improvements: quicker ultrasonic scanning, dependable camera-based face unlock, and deeper system integration that ties biometrics to power management, AI processing and secure payments.
