LAX Launches Biometric Entry System for U.S. Citizens with Enhanced Passenger Processing

August 15, 2025

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has officially launched the Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) program at its Tom Bradley International Terminal and Terminal 7, giving U.S. citizens the option to verify their identity through facial recognition instead of presenting physical documents upon arrival. The initiative, developed in partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), is part of a nationwide effort to streamline passenger processing while maintaining security at major ports of entry.

Contactless Processing at LAX

The new system uses auto-capture cameras operated by CBP officers to take a live photo of each arriving traveler. The image is compared against CBP’s secure database to confirm identity and citizenship, perform law enforcement checks, and create a record of the crossing—all within seconds. According to CBP, the process reduces wait times and provides a more efficient, contactless experience for travelers entering the United States.

“While the process is efficient and touchless, CBP officers are still on hand to instruct passengers on the process and assist them at any given point during screening, as well as take customs declarations and ask questions,” said Oscar Acuña, CBP Acting LAX Port Director. He also emphasized that passengers who do not wish to participate may opt out and proceed through traditional document verification with an officer.

Since the national launch of EPP, CBP reports a 25 percent reduction in wait times for U.S. citizens. This mirrors results at other airports where similar systems have been deployed, helping to improve passenger flow without compromising border security. John Ackerman, Chief Executive Officer of Los Angeles World Airports, welcomed the deployment, stating: “This technology represents our shared commitment to enhancing both security and the passenger experience. As we prepare for world class events, innovations like EPP are critical to our readiness and demonstrate our commitment to 21st-century solutions for modern travelers.”

Part of a National Biometric Expansion

The adoption of biometric arrivals at LAX is one element of a broader expansion of facial recognition in U.S. aviation. CBP and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) continue to increase the availability of touchless identification systems across the country. The TSA now offers Touchless ID screening at 14 airports for PreCheck travelers, reflecting growing acceptance of facial recognition as a secure and efficient verification tool.

Other airports are also adopting new biometric solutions. Denver International Airport introduced dedicated TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lanes earlier this month, reinforcing the trend toward contactless processing at busy U.S. travel hubs.

At LAX, the Enhanced Passenger Processing system underscores both the rapid adoption of biometric technology and the ongoing debate about its role in balancing efficiency, security, and passenger choice. While officials highlight faster processing and improved safety, travelers still retain the ability to decline participation and use traditional verification methods.
