Lakota Opens Pre-Orders for a FAP60 Fingerprint Scanner That Runs Natively on iPhone

September 4, 2026

Lakota Software Solutions has opened pre-orders for the Phantom F60, a FAP60 live-scan fingerprint scanner the company says is the first of its kind to work natively on iPhone and iPad.

The scanner captures over USB-C on iOS and iPadOS, and Lakota supports Windows, macOS, Linux and Android from the same SDK, so the same device and integration can serve a phone, a tablet or a desktop enrolment station.

The capture area meets FAP60 at 500 pixels per inch, covering flat four-finger, two-finger and single-finger impressions as well as rolled prints. Lakota describes the unit as ultra-thin, ultra-light and very low power, with no optical elements to align, clean or break, and says it costs a fraction of a traditional optical FAP60 scanner.

That form factor comes from the sensor. The Phantom F60 is built on the TCAP60, a capacitive module developed by Touch Biometrix and fabricated by Sharp Display Technology on an IGZO thin-film transistor substrate. The sensor measures 3.2 by 3 inches, which is what carries it over the FAP60 threshold, and reads at 500 pixels per inch through a read-out integrated circuit of Touch Biometrix design. Lakota says the Phantom F60 is the first product to bring the technology to market.

Touch Biometrix announced the sensor as the biggest and thinnest capacitive fingerprint sensor of its kind, and has since offered it in glass, flexible film and colour-filter variants.

Two certifications are still outstanding. Lakota says the Phantom F60 is designed to meet FBI Appendix F and Apple MFi requirements, and that both are in process rather than granted. Appendix F sits within the FBI’s Electronic Biometric Transmission Specification and sets image quality conditions well beyond a nominal resolution figure, including grey-scale uniformity measured across the whole platen rather than the centre. Certification signals that a device will interoperate with the Next Generation Identification system. MFi is Apple’s accessory certification and licensing programme, which covers branding and compatibility assurance rather than basic function, since USB-C ports on current iPhones accept standard peripherals.

The company is taking pre-orders now against a 10 percent refundable deposit, which reserves production allocation and fixes pricing. Lakota anticipates delivery in the second quarter of 2027 from limited supply, with mass production in the fourth quarter of that year.

The device had its first public showing at Identity Week America in Washington this week.

Lakota is better known for biometric software than hardware, including ANSI/NIST-ITL and EBTS tooling and an image acquisition library the company says is FBI Appendix F-certified.
