JR East to Pilot Facial Recognition Ticket Gates on Jōetsu Shinkansen

East Japan Railway (JR East) will test facial recognition ticket gates at Niigata and Nagaoka stations on the Jōetsu Shinkansen, marking the operator’s latest step toward walk-through access under its “Suica Renaissance” program.

Pilot Details

According to the Niigata Branch, the trial will run from November 6, 2025, through March 31, 2026, with a pause from December 25 to January 7. Riders who register in advance will be able to walk through gates without presenting tickets or tapping Suica cards, with validation performed via facial recognition. Each station will host one gate during the pilot, and the operator is recruiting customer monitors to participate.

JR East is deploying two gate concepts, with NEC technology installed at Niigata Station and Panasonic Connect equipment at Nagaoka. The trial will also assess audio and visual guidance for passengers and the overall usability of the systems in live conditions.

Significance

The pilot is intended to reduce congestion at busy Shinkansen turnstiles and streamline the experience for commuters with frequent-use passes. By running side-by-side tests of different vendors’ systems, JR East will collect comparative performance data before deciding on any wider rollout.

The initiative reflects a cautious approach to biometrics in public transit, with limited scope, opt-in enrollment, and a focus on operational evaluation. JR East has previously outlined plans to explore “beyond touch” ticketing using biometric verification, including an earlier announcement of facial recognition gate trials that previewed the systems now scheduled for deployment.
