“The vulnerabilities we’re seeing in identity management today are not about the cryptography. They’re about the lack of strong user verification and authentication.”
Jay Meier is, by all accounts, a bona fide expert in the business of face-based digital identity verification. Acting as the SVP of North American Operations for FaceTec, Jay has become an evangelist, of sorts, for the company’s innovative approach to remote identity assurance. He is outspoken about key issues facing the industry, so it’s always worth listening when he makes a public appearance.
His latest was on the ID Talk Podcast, where he shared insights on a number of important topics, including:
Challenges with Standards: Jay critiqued certain standards bodies for being slow to adopt biometrics due to their probabilistic nature, despite the clear advancements and benefits they offer. He also pointed out that current standards are often outdated and do not address modern attack vectors like deepfake injection attacks.
Industry Influence and Regulation: He discussed the role of organizations like Kantara in pushing for better standards and guidelines in remote identity verification, highlighting the collaborative efforts needed to improve security.
Biometrics vs. Cryptography: He discussed the differences between cryptographic systems and biometric authentication. Cryptographic systems provide binary outcomes, while biometric systems are probabilistic, which has historically led to skepticism about their reliability.
“The vulnerabilities we’re seeing in identity management today are not about the cryptography,” he said. “They’re about the lack of strong user verification and authentication.”
