Indian Railways Launches Aadhaar-Based Biometric Attendance for Ticket Checking Staff

Indian Railways has launched an Aadhaar-based biometric attendance system for its ticket checking staff (TTEs), marking a major step in modernizing workforce management. The first fully digital TTE lobby went live on August 29, 2025, at the Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction, replacing manual sign-in with Aadhaar-enabled biometric verification at designated Ticket Examiner lobbies.

Real-time, tamper-proof tracking

The system integrates biometric authentication with the Ticket Examiner Lobby platform to create a tamper-proof, transparent process that records working hours and duty status in real time. It is now active across divisions including Banaras, Sonpur, Ratlam, and Malda, as well as major stations such as CSMT Mumbai, with phased expansion planned for the North Central, North Eastern, and North Western zones.

Dileep Kumar, Executive Director of Information & Privacy at the Ministry of Railways, explained: “The new system combines biometric authentication with the Ticket Examiner Lobby system, creating a tamper-proof, transparent, and privacy-compliant attendance process that accurately records working hours and duty status in real time.”

Part of a broader digital transformation

This initiative is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing digital transformation strategy, which also includes other government-sector biometric deployments. Officials say the new attendance system will help prevent malpractices, improve operational efficiency, and provide analytics to support better workforce planning. Privacy safeguards are built into the design, with Aadhaar authentication used for secure identification.

Railway authorities are reviewing results from the initial deployment to assess readiness for a wider rollout. Early observations suggest that digitizing attendance could reduce paperwork and administrative overhead while giving managers faster insight into staff deployment patterns.
