India Showcases AI-Ready Digital Identity Infrastructure at Global Summit

India is hosting world leaders and technology executives at the AI Impact Summit from February 16-20, 2026, positioning its digital public infrastructure model – anchored by the Aadhaar biometric identity system – as a blueprint for integrating artificial intelligence with population-scale identity systems.

The five-day summit in New Delhi, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has drawn 20 national leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, alongside tech CEOs from Google, OpenAI, Qualcomm, and Microsoft. The 250,000 expected visitors will explore how digital identity, payments, and data exchange infrastructure can support AI-driven services while maintaining security and data sovereignty.

The Digital Impact Alliance is launching policy research at the summit examining how digital public infrastructure and AI converge. “DPI provides authenticated identity, payments, and data exchange layers; AI brings the capability to personalize, predict, and automate,” according to the Alliance’s analysis.

India began rolling out Aadhaar-linked biometric UPI payments in October 2025, demonstrating the integration of identity and payment infrastructure that forms the foundation of its DPI model. The Unique Identification Authority of India recently deactivated 25 million Aadhaar numbers to prevent identity fraud, demonstrating ongoing efforts to maintain database integrity.

A partnership between UIDAI and Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI, effective March 18, 2025, provides a concrete example of AI-ready identity infrastructure in practice. The collaboration enables voice-based Aadhaar interactions in 10 Indian languages, delivers real-time fraud alerts during authentication, and hosts the AI system on-premise within UIDAI’s secure, air-gapped infrastructure to ensure data sovereignty.

Expected outcomes include unveiling India’s AI Governance Guidelines and potentially producing a DPI-AI playbook documenting adoption pathways for governments worldwide. The Atlantic Council has called for the summit to focus on creating concrete tools and frameworks showing what worked, what failed, and how proven strategies can be adapted to different contexts rather than one-off pilot projects.

The summit showcases India’s biometric innovation ecosystem, which has expanded beyond Aadhaar to include applications in exam security, airport immigration, and healthcare.
