IDEX Biometrics Cuts Operating Costs by 52 Percent as It Refocuses on Access Control

IDEX Biometrics has reported a 52 percent year-over-year reduction in operating expenses for the first half of 2025, underscoring the financial impact of its ongoing restructuring and strategic repositioning. The company’s latest results show operating expenses, excluding cost of materials and depreciation, at $5.2 million compared to $10.7 million in the first half of 2024.

Shift Toward Access Control Solutions

The cost reductions reflect a broader transformation that began earlier in 2025 under CEO Anders Storbråten, who assumed leadership in March. The company is shifting its primary focus from biometric payment cards to the access control sector, centering on the launch of its IDEX Multiuse Access Card. While IDEX continues to maintain its presence in the payments market, this strategic realignment aims to position the firm for growth in secure building and facility access applications.

The new direction was formally outlined in a May 2025 strategic update, in which IDEX detailed its plans to leverage its fingerprint authentication expertise in the physical access market. This move comes after years of development in biometric smart cards for financial services, an area that has faced slower-than-expected mainstream adoption.

Leadership Changes and Financial Management

The restructuring has been accompanied by changes in IDEX’s executive team. In June 2025, Chief Financial Officer Kristian Flaten resigned effective June 30. CEO Storbråten subsequently assumed the role of CFO, taking direct responsibility for the company’s financial oversight as it implements its new strategy.

While the half-year report did not provide specific revenue or profitability figures, the sharp decline in operating expenses highlights progress in streamlining operations. The changes are intended to create a leaner cost base, allowing IDEX to redirect resources toward product development and market entry efforts in the access control segment.

The company’s move into access control also reflects shifting dynamics in the biometric technology sector. Demand for secure, frictionless entry solutions is growing in commercial, governmental, and residential environments, with biometric cards offering a portable alternative to fixed biometric scanners. IDEX aims to capitalize on this trend with products that combine the security of on-card fingerprint matching with the flexibility to operate in both physical and digital authentication scenarios.

Although the payment card market remains part of IDEX’s portfolio, recent filings confirm only that a Mastercard Letter of Approval for a biometric payment card (produced by KONA I using IDEX technology) was granted in the first quarter of 2025. There is no public record of a global Mastercard approval in 2024, and the company’s public communications now emphasize its access control offerings as the core of its growth strategy.
