Identy.io Claims Top-3 Global Ranking in First NIST Fingerprint Identification Benchmark

Identy.io has placed in the top three globally in its debut submission to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Friction Ridge Image and Features Technology Evaluation – Exemplar One-to-Many (FRIF TE E1N), the agency’s benchmark for fingerprint identification across large-scale databases.

The FRIF TE E1N benchmark tests algorithms against databases of up to three million subjects, reflecting the operating conditions of national border crossings and ID enrollment centers. Identy achieved a 99.99 percent match rate – a false negative identification rate of 0.0001 – in the 4-4-2 flat configuration widely used at border checkpoints, and outperformed established leaders at that scale.

Beyond accuracy, the company reported search performance of 2.1 seconds median on a three-million-subject database, a figure it describes as four times faster than its nearest competitors in those conditions. Template creation was also 2.2 times faster than competing submissions, with zero segmentation failures. Identy ranked in the top tier across all three test classes: Class A (index fingers), Class B (identification flats), and Class C (plain and rolled ten-prints).

The FRIF TE E1N evaluation is the identification-focused counterpart to the Proprietary Fingerprint Template (PFT) series, which tests one-to-one matching. Identy previously entered the PFT III benchmark, recording results within the ten most accurate ever posted to that evaluation. The new FRIF TE E1N result extends that record into the operationally more demanding identification context.

“Reaching the top 3 globally on our first NIST FRIF TE submission, and doing it faster than vendors who have been in this space for decades, tells us we’re solving the problem the right way,” said Jesus Aragón, CEO and Founder of Identy.io. “The benchmark is independent and public, anyone can verify it. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to.”

The fingerprint results complement Identy’s earlier face recognition submissions to the NIST Face Recognition Technology Evaluation (FRTE) 1:N and 1:1 programs, where the company also achieved competitive rankings in border scenarios. Together, the two modalities position the company as a full Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) provider.

Identy is headquartered in the US with offices in Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, Spain, and India. Its touchless mobile biometrics platform is currently used in national ID and border control projects. The company’s touchless fingerprint capture approach was first demonstrated publicly at Connect:ID 2021 and has since expanded into commercial deployments. Verified FRIF TE E1N results are publicly available through the NIST website.
