iDenfy Adds BSN Masking Support for Dutch Identity Verification

Identity verification provider iDenfy has added support for Burgerservicenummer (BSN) masking during KYC verification for Dutch residents, allowing users to complete identity checks while keeping their national identifier number redacted in compliance with Dutch privacy law and the GDPR.

The BSN is classified as sensitive personal data under both EU and Dutch national privacy regulations, and most private companies are prohibited from collecting or storing it. Dutch individuals have traditionally been required to manually cover their BSN before submitting identity documents for verification, using the official KopieID app, photo editing tools, or physical obscuration. Many international KYC providers have not supported this workflow, leading to rejected verifications and lost conversions for businesses operating in the Netherlands.

iDenfy’s new feature activates when the Netherlands is selected or auto-identified during the verification process. The system accepts Dutch passports, national identity cards, and driving licences in PDF, JPG, and PNG formats with the BSN already masked using any method. When a masked BSN is detected and the document meets requirements, the user is automatically accepted. Documents flagged with high-risk indicators are routed to iDenfy’s in-house review team for manual assessment.

“The people in the Netherlands have always had the right to keep their BSN covered, and we shouldn’t demand it when asking to perform the identity verification,” said Domantas Ciulde, CEO of iDenfy.

The BSN is automatically excluded from the verification record to ensure partners do not inadvertently collect or retain data they have no legal basis to hold. The feature is implemented as an opt-in setting activated on a per-partner basis, with sandbox access provided to validate the end-to-end flow before going live. No integration changes are required on the partner side.

The capability is built on top of iDenfy’s identity verification infrastructure, which combines AI-powered document analysis, biometric matching, and liveness detection. Automated verifications are completed instantly, while human-supervised checks are typically resolved within three minutes. The company says its biometric algorithms confirm live presence to prevent the use of photographs, 3D masks, and other spoofing attempts, with additional filtering for deepfakes and AI-generated biometric samples.

iDenfy supports document verification across more than 200 countries and territories and holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification.
