IDEMIA Sets New Performance Mark in Latest NIST TE E1N Fingerprint Benchmark

IDEMIA Public Security is reporting leading results in the latest round of NIST’s Friction Ridge Image and Features Technology Evaluation (FRIF TE E1N), the U.S. government’s primary benchmark for large scale fingerprint identification. The new findings come as NIST resumes comprehensive one-to-many fingerprint testing for the first time since the legacy FpVTE 2012 program, offering updated metrics for agencies preparing to modernize national AFIS systems.

The FRIF TE evaluation measures how well algorithms locate correct matches in large databases using rolled and plain fingerprints. IDEMIA says its submission produced the strongest published accuracy scores across several categories while also delivering faster matching speeds designed for high-volume workloads such as border control, background checks, and national identity systems.

The company describes the results as a significant improvement over earlier benchmarks, pointing to gains in both precision at stringent operating points and throughput for large-scale searches. While FRIF TE assesses algorithmic components rather than full AFIS products, IDEMIA argues that the outcome validates the core technology underpinning its government deployments.

NIST’s decision to restart one-to-many fingerprint testing reflects sustained demand from national registries, law enforcement agencies, and identity authorities for comparative performance data. Previous rounds of FRIF TE have highlighted advances from multiple vendors, and the latest publication underscores intensifying competition among suppliers of foundational biometric infrastructure.
