IDEMIA Launches MFACE Gen2 Face Capture Device for Border and Travel Processing

IDEMIA Public Security has launched MFACE Gen2, the next generation of its facial recognition device for processing travelers at airports, seaports and land borders. The unit combines live 3D multi-face tracking, AI-based facial recognition and presentation attack detection in a single device.

MFACE automatically detects, tracks and captures the faces of people as they move through its capture area and matches the images in real time. IDEMIA said the new version has a large capture volume and a non-intrusive user experience intended to handle a wide range of travelers, including families, people with reduced mobility and those wearing glasses or face masks.

The company said MFACE Gen2 includes integrated presentation attack detection, which is designed to identify spoofing attempts such as photos or masks, along with secure web services and encrypted communications. It does not store biometric data locally. An embedded computing unit, open architecture and configurable settings are intended to let operators integrate the device into existing border and passenger-processing systems with minimal changes to infrastructure.

“Amid rising traveler volumes, verifying travelers’ identities quickly and accurately without disrupting passenger flows remains a constant operational challenge,” said Tim Ferris, senior vice president and global head of travel and transport at IDEMIA Public Security. He said the device was designed to deliver “fast, accurate, and intuitive identity verification that reduces friction for travelers.”

Derek Tan, the division’s chief product officer for travel and transport, said customers had asked for “faster capture, higher biometric quality, greater ease of use, and a seamless experience for operators and travelers alike.” He said the product builds on more than 50 years of the company’s biometric work.

IDEMIA said more than 3,000 MFACE units are deployed across passenger processing and border management programs worldwide, covering air, land and sea environments. That figure refers to the MFACE product line as a whole rather than the new model. The company is targeting port authorities, border agencies and transportation operators with Gen2.

IDEMIA Public Security, which provides biometric systems to around 600 government agencies, is being acquired by travel technology company Amadeus, which agreed earlier this year to buy the division from Advent International for about 1.2 billion euros.
