IDEMIA Expands SMART-E Kiosks with Remote Biometric Enrollment in Pennsylvania and Colorado

IDEMIA Public Security North America has begun deploying enhanced SMART-E kiosks in Pennsylvania and Colorado, introducing a remote biometric enrollment system designed to simplify civil applicant processing and criminal background checks. The company intends to extend the rollout to five states by 2025 and at least ten by 2026, aiming to make identity verification services more accessible across the United States.

Upgraded Biometric Technology and Standards Compliance

The upgraded SMART-E kiosks are equipped with FBI-certified ten-print fingerprint scanners that have a fingerprint rejection rate of less than two percent. This improvement represents a notable step forward in the accuracy and reliability of remote identity verification. The system is built to comply with NIST 800-63A digital identity guidelines and NIST 800-63-3a standards for identity proofing, ensuring that it meets recognized federal security and performance requirements.

“I’m thrilled to see the success of our upgraded enrollment kiosk so far in Pennsylvania and Colorado, providing residents with a fast, reliable way to complete their criminal background checks,” said Casey Mayfield, Market Leader of Enrollment at IDEMIA Public Security North America. “As a long-time contributor to the criminal enrollment space, I’m excited to continue servicing more states with a secure, easy-to-deploy identity proofing solution.”

Remote Enrollment Features and Accessibility

The kiosks enable in-person enrollment sessions conducted with remote agents, eliminating the need for on-site staff while maintaining high security through high-resolution video monitoring with 180-degree views. This remote setup allows a single agent to assist multiple users across different time zones, which can reduce staffing costs and improve operational efficiency. The system also includes secure document scanning for government-issued identification, built-in fraud detection capabilities, and tamper-resistant physical safeguards.

According to Christian Henry, Senior Vice President of Client Success at IDEMIA Public Security North America, “I’m proud to continue providing states and government customers with the latest innovations in secure and advanced technologies.”

Compact and adaptable, the SMART-E kiosk design is suitable for both urban and rural sites, enabling deployment in locations that may not have had easy access to identity verification services in the past. While the adoption of contactless and remote identity verification has accelerated in recent years, this deployment underscores the growing role of self-service kiosks in supporting government programs and employment-related background checks.
