Idemia Expands Remote Enrollment Kiosks and Next-Gen IDs Across U.S.

Idemia has launched a nationwide expansion of biometric enrollment kiosks and enhanced state ID cards through its Public Security division. The company is rolling out new SMART-E kiosks, which let applicants register fingerprints and IDs under a remote agent’s live supervision, to motor vehicle agencies and police departments in multiple states.

The kiosks are designed to meet NIST digital identity guidelines, allowing one off-site operator to monitor several stations at once, a boon for smaller communities without staffed offices. Pennsylvania and Colorado have already deployed them, and Idemia plans to have five states on board by end of 2025 and ten by 2026. The goal is to modernize background checks and civil ID enrollments with a faster, contactless experience. Initial pilots show less than 2 percent fingerprint rejection rates, improving efficiency.

Alongside the kiosks, Idemia unveiled redesigned driver’s licenses in partnership with state DMVs. California just began issuing new IDs with advanced anti‑fraud features (polycarbonate cards with digital security elements, Real ID compliance, etc.), and Texas will follow with its own high‑security license design featuring laser‑engraved state icons and tamper‑evident materials.

Idemia’s CEO for Civil Identity called the California launch a milestone in raising the bar for ID security. Under a new contract, Idemia will also supply Texas with a suite of identity documents beyond licenses, from voter ID certificates to firearm permits.

Earlier this year, Idemia topped NIST rankings for fingerprint matching accuracy, bolstering its reputation as a leading vendor for government ID solutions. With these deployments, the company is cementing its role in the next generation of U.S. identity infrastructure, marrying remote biometric enrollment with more resilient physical IDs.
